Story
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK.
In 2017, nearly 6000 suicides were recorded in Great Britain. Of these, 75% were men. Suicide is the largest cause of death for men under 50. 125 lives are lost each week to suicide; 84 of those are men.
Some research also suggests that men who can’t speak/feel they have no one to openly speak about their emotions may be less able to recognise symptoms of mental health problems in themselves and less likely to reach out for support. As a result, men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women: only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men
Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM run a free and confidential helpline and webchat 7 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone who needs to talk about lifes problems.
