Story

In November 2019, Danny O'Dwyer (a well loved husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend) passed away after an 18month battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The motor neurone disease association (MNDA) is a charity close to our heart. They provided Danny and our family with support after his diagnosis and throughout his illness. They also fund and support vital research towards finding a cure for this disease which is presently progressive, incurable and terminal.

This year Danny would have celebrated his 70th birthday (born 01/07/1951). To increase awareness about MND in Danny’s memory and to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in the process, we are setting up an activity fundraising challenge. Whoever wants to get involved and get active and healthy at the same time, we hope to reach a combined distance of activity equivalent to travelling around the world, be it through walking, running, cycling, swimming etc by 1st July 2021; any steps count!  Full details of how to participate are outlined below.

Aim: Keep us active, motivated and healthy and raise money for MND in Danny O’Dwyers memory.
Start-finish: Jan 2021, ends 1st July 2021
Task: We are joining together in various teams and combining the distances achieved through various activities (walking, running, swimming, cycling, etc). 
Team goal: Reach 1,751 miles (Danny’s date of birth 1/7/51) in 6 months

Goal: To cover the same distance as going around the world (24,901 miles) before what would have been Danny's 70th birthday through tallying the distances from everyone involved (need a number of committed teams to achieve this - so please tell your friends and family!)


Team options: between 2 and 8 in a team.  As a rough idea of commitment: 
2s = 35 miles each week per person (5 miles or 12,500 steps daily)
4s = 17.5 miles each week per person (2.5 miles or 6,250 steps daily)
8s = 8.75 miles each week per person (1.25 miles or 3,125 steps daily)

2,000-2,500 steps = Mile
We are measuring 1 mile as 2,500 steps

Each group will need:
-Team name
-Team leader & whatsapp/email
-Number & names of participants in group (2-8)
-Team leader to record their teams distances/results & forward details to lpodwyer@gmail.com fortnightly.

Throughout the 6 months we encourage you to take photographs of your routes, views, create mini video of experience, snaps of you and your team mates, screenshots of distance (send to Laura via email/whatsapp) & these will be shared on
