Story
We're approaching 4 years since losing my incredible Mum, something I never thought I would have to get my head round from the age of 22. St Barnabas Hospice is the most incredible charity who were definitely a huge strength behind my family throughout the 2 years of her being ill, and on that final day. My 3 big memories of how incredible they are....
1) The nurses. Out of all of the health professionals who came out to care for Mum when she was still home, they were the best. They came with the biggest smile on their faces, never felt rushed and they acknowledged Mum as a person, my Dad for what he was going through... And there was never a time where they didn't sit with you and just ask how you were. They were far more than just a nurse.
2) When my Mum was in the hospice St Barnabas helped provide the most beautiful service and party for Mum and Dad to renew their vowels, something they had planned for a while. They facilitated the whole thing and helped make it happen.
3) That final evening. The one we knew was coming, but you just can't prepare for. St Barnabas Hospice had no limits what they would do for us as a family that night. They made space and room for anyone who wanted to be there. They dragged chairs, cushions and mattresses from around the building to ensure we were all comfortable and could get rest. They were there every step of the way. After they gave us time, space and support.
St Barnabas also offer continued support and free bereavement counselling for anyone, even those who have not used the service or lost someone through cancer. Although I haven't accessed this yet, it's a comfort to know the support is there when you are ready.
I can't express enough how important this charity is and how much they do on a daily basis. I'm proud to do this work in memory of my Mum, to support my friend and to raise money for a charity so close to my heart. Please donate :)
