Story
On October 8th I will be embarking on an expedition to climb through the Himalaya mountains, the destination being Everest Base Camp. The journey will start with a flight from Kathmandu to the infamous Tenzing-Hillary airport in Lukla, commissioned by Sir Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the airport is dubbed the most extreme airport in the world at an altitude of 2,860m. From there the trek begins, ascending the valley to Gokyo whilst trying to acclimatise to the altitude. After climbing Gokyo peak it’s then on to cross the Cho La Pass (weather permitting), not before crossing a glacier, with another to look forward to afterwards. The final hurdle before reaching base camp is to climb Kala Patthar, at an altitude of 5,545m I’ll be reaching the summit at dawn.
The total distance covered will be around 180km over 18days. With each day consisting of around 8 hours walking – blisters are one of the inevitable challenges. Coupled with severe weather conditions and temperatures as low as -20°C it’s unlikely to be a walk in the park! I will not be doing this at part of an organised tour and will therefore carry all my own equipment and will be (trying!) to navigate myself.
The charity I will be raising money for is called Cash for Kids. The charity is a local charity, raising money for local children. Cash for Kids are a grant giving charity allocating funds to local charitable and voluntary projects that work directly with disadvantaged children. They have supported over 350 projects dealing with poverty, neglect, disability and distress affecting children across Greater Manchester providing better recreational facilities and safe spaces.
For every donation made through this site another 25% on top of this is added through gift aid. The company I work for have generously agreed to double any donations up to £1000. I have the potential to raise £2250, so please dig deep and help raise money for a good cause.
