Story
I have been involved in the ICVI for the last decade and have been continually impressed by the progress the research team have made towards the ultimate goal of treating cancer with vaccines and immunotherapy. Under the guidance of Professor Angus Dalgleish, the small team of researchers are focussed and dedicated in their efforts. I am aiming to swim a mile in the Serpentine to raise funds to ensure this vital research continues. As a very small charity the majority of the money raised goes directly towards the research team. I am new to open water swimming so this really is a challenge for me.
Our unique charity's work over the last twenty years has been devoted to supporting Professor Angus Dalgleish's pioneering research into this previously unknown field. In 2000 the idea that our immune system could be harnessed to fight cancer was dismissed by the wider cancer funding community. In response, a group of Professor Dalgleish's grateful patients set up a charity to fund a research team at St George's University of London. Since then we have raised over £8 million and our vision of immunotherapy as a mainstream treatment for cancer has become a reality. Many mainstream charities are funding various immunotherapy projects including ours. ICVI has achieved a huge amount in the last twenty years. Professor Dalgleish and his research team have helped patients with many types of cancer, including melanoma, head and neck, pancreatic and breast.
