Story
Our team is made up of staff from A23, the early pregnancy and emergency gynae unit at QMC. We are walking 21 laps around QMC Campus (each lap is almost a mile!!) to raise money for the miscarriage association because it is an incredibly good cause, close to many of our hearts not only because of the patients that we treat but also because of personal loss that some of our staff members have experienced. The miscarriage association supplies our unit with countless resources that are invaluable to our patients experiencing pregnancy loss completely free of charge and we want to support and give back to them in any way that we can.
Experts estimate that each year around 250,000 pregnancies end in miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy in the UK. This figure suggests that around 21,000 pregnancies will be lost in the 31 days of July alone. We are asking our supporters to spend the month of July reflecting on this figure by raising awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy loss, signposting people to the services we offer, and raising funds to ensure that the M.A can continue to be there for those that need us most. Last year, over 100 supporters walked, ran, cycled and swam throughout July, so you won't be doing this alone. Please look for the hashtag #MilesThatMatter, and know that we are cheering you on from afar!" Fundraising for the Miles that Matter challenge has given me a real sense of achievement. It has been a great way to give me a focus, to give something back to the association for the support and resources and to raise awareness of a cause that (in my opinion) is not spoken about enough!"
