Story
Project Luangwa is a charity that provides much-needed support to the rural communities and children of South Luangwa, Zambia. The charity aims to improve the long-term economic prospects of these communities, mostly by investing in education. Project Luangwa gives 150 vulnerable children a secondary school education through sponsors, and a further 30 places at universities and colleges. 1,200 children now receive extracuricula maths help. The charity has made and distributed 1000s of washable sanitary pads, allowing girls to attend school throughout the month. In addition, Project Luangwa provides wheelchairs for the disabled, sponsorship for orphans and builds schools, libraries and public loos. Please see the gallery for more.
This charity means a lot to both of us. In 2010, we collected and then delivered school uniforms, shoes and textbooks to a primary school in Mfuwe. Since then we've undertaken several fundraising projects in the UK to help support the children in the area. We've been back a few times to see the amazing impact this charity has on the community.
Project Luangwa relies on revenue from the local safari business and donations from tourists. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all camps and lodges in the South Luangwa National Park are shut. Tourism in Zambia has ground to a halt and Project Luangwa will not receive any income from tourists this year. The local economy, which is built on tourism, will also struggle. The charity now finds itself hard-pushed to carry out its fantastic work. By raising money, we hope to help to fill the gap until tourism can resume.
Over 14 days we will both ascend and descend the height from sea level to the summit of Everest (8848m): Zu on a bike and Titus running. We'd be incredibly grateful for any donation, no matter how small.
Thank you.
