Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On March 6th 2015 our mother, Yvonne Smith was admitted to hospital with a very rare condition called Gullian Barre Syndrome.   She lost the movement in her legs and was unable to walk and couldn't use her arms properly either, within a few days it had moved to her lungs and she was unable to breathe on her own so was moved to the ICU (intensive care) where she was intubated put on a ventilator (this was half an hour before her 65th birthday).  It was a very scary time for us all, she received plasma treatment.  After 4 days she was given a tracheotomy and was woken up, she made what we thought was good progress and after another week in the ICU she was moved to a ward.  She was still unable to move properly but was having a physio.  Very scarily she had a massive relapse after a week on the ward and the GBS came back, no one had realised and she aspirated whilst eating and food went on her lungs.  She was rushed back up to the ICU and had to have another emergency intubation and the plasma treatment again.  Due to the food on her lungs she ended up with sepsis and was so poorly, we nearly lost her, there was a few nights of not much sleep and very little hope.  This was all just before Easter weekend, but on Good Friday they felt that her infection had peeked and she was showing signs of fighting it off, we finally had a little bit of hope.  She was woken again on Easter Saturday and over the next 2 weeks in ICU she made the most amazing progress.  She was then moved to HDU and then onto  a ward.  She continued to make huge steps forward with her physios and after a few shaky starts she took her first steps.  On Tuesday 12th May she finally left hospital and was moved to a residential rehabilitation unit in Sevenoaks where she moved onto walking with just a stick and then walking on her own. On Friday 12th June, over 3 months since she first went into hospital she will finally be coming home for good.  There will still have a long road to full recovery but at least she will be with dad at home.  Mum has been a total inspiration to us and we could not be prouder of how she has overcome this awful illness.  We would like to raise money for GAIN a charity who support victims of GBS and they are hoping more research will mean quicker diagnoses and treatment.

Please support us ladies in this walk by donating what you can to, every penny will go towards this amazing charity.
