"We done it!" On Saturday October 10, at 7pm on the dot, Jo Stickels and I arrived at John o'Groats after 55.56 net hours of cycling, averaging 17.5mph, having covered 896 miles since leaving Land's End at 9.10am the previous Saturday. It was hard, exhausting, at times very wet and cold, painful (Sticks got through it on 85 Nurofen), arduous and bloody long. We argued and sniped, we got lost, we got punctures, we got bad wind - too many energy bars and fried breakfasts - but we made it. LEJOG, bagged, and in a respectable time, with no injuries and marriages still intact.
I was attracted to the charity SolarAid
because it achieves two main things. It supplies solar power equipment
for lighting, heating and computers to poor and isolated communities in
Africa and South America. But it also encourages these people to create
sustainable business based on free solar power, improving
their local economies and teaching local people about renewable energy as
well. It seems a very worthy cause.
Times are tough but please give generously - we stayed the course, and unlike Cracknell and chums last week, no cheating.
Thank you very much for your support
