We provide expert care and support to young people with cancer
Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my
JustGiving page. As you might know, since hitting my mid
thirties I have embraced the world of exercise and fitness! While this is
totally out of character for me and may appear like a mid-life crisis, I prefer
to look at it as just compensating for a lack of sporting activity in my youth!
As part of this rollercoaster of pain, I joined the Castle Semple Rowing Club
and have been training for several months with my fellow novice rowing partner,
John Delaney. We’ve signed up for an event called The Boston Rowing Marathon, a
31 mile ‘race’ on the River Witham between
and . It
would be fair to say we are no Pinsent and Redgrave and this ordeal is likely
to take us around six hours of toil and sweat. This caper has come around all
too soon and I’m asking for your support in sponsoring me on behalf of the
Teenage Cancer Trust. Every day in the , six teenagers and young adults
will learn they have cancer. These young people, in the midst of their already
difficult journey to adulthood, are faced with a possible life-threatening
illness and very often receive treatment in inappropriate facilities. TCT’s top
priority is building units in NHS hospitals specifically for teenagers with
cancer. As well as superior medical facilities, these units are equipped with
day rooms, kitchens and chill-out rooms where teenagers can relax and feel at
home or have friends and family to visit in comfortable surroundings.
Importantly, the units provide an environment where teenagers can meet others
in a similar situation and allow patients to build friendships to help cope
with their disease. My rowing partner John lost his teenage
son, Andrew, to cancer a few years ago and at the time there were no facilities
suitable for treating teenagers. All donations and sponsorship money raised
here will be paid directly to the TCT's West of Scotland campaign. Work on the
TCT Yorkhill Unit is progressing and as soon as all the funding is in place,
efforts will be redirected to raising the money for the TCT Unit forming part
of the new hospital for sick children to be built in in a few years time. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast
and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell
them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money
directly to the TCT and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible
donation by a
taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst
saving time and cutting costs for the charity.I’d be very grateful if you decide to
sponsor me and support this important cause.
