Whisper To Katrina is a new musical work led by acclaimed jazz pianist Trevor Watkis to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
The project has seen Trevor work with 12 young jazz musicians from London, to trace the history of New Orleans jazz - from the African rhythms and spirituals of Congo Square, through to the more contemporary sounds of Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and the Neville Brothers.
The results will be performed in full at London's Kings Place on Friday October 9th, with contributions from some of the project's mentors, including Byron Wallen, Eska and Lekan Babalola.
Accompanying the music will be a set of striking images of Katrina's aftermath, captured by documentary photographer Mary-Jane Maybury, as well as newly commissioned poetry by the spoken word artist Nick Makoha.
Entry to the event is free, although Trevor and the organisers are encouraging all those who attend to make a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee via this JustGiving page.
