Story

Thanks for taking time to visit our fundraising page.

Once again in September we are undertaking March for Men for Prostate Cancer UK, a walking marathon between football grounds.  This year we are very excited that Jeff Stelling is joining us again, and the walk is in memory of television presenter Bill Turnbull who passed away from prostate cancer in August 2022.  We start at Wembley which will be very exciting, and finish at Wycombe Wanderers which was Bill’s club.  Details of the route will hopefully follow in due course.  As Jeff says, ‘This march is for Bill and for everyone affected by prostate cancer. It’s going to be great fun, lots of football chatter and an enormous sense of achievement as we cross the line together at Adams Park’.

As usual we like to add a bit to our marathon to make it more of a challenge each year, so we have decided to take on the Isle of Wight Coastal Path as training for the marathon!  We love walking along the coast so we thought this would be ideal, giving us some variety from the Dorset coast and challenging us a bit more with a few hills and having to navigate small trails and footpaths.  The coastal path circumnavigates the island and is around 70 miles long, starting in Ryde and visiting Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay, Ventnor and Bembridge.  We plan to do the path in 4 legs, fitting in with Tony’s weekends off (and football)! We will of course also be doing the Great South Run in October as usual, which is a 10 mile run.  This will be Tony’s 15th Great South Run. It is actually on his 63rd birthday this year, but he still insisted he wanted to do it.

As you know from previous years, the reason for raising money for Prostate Cancer UK is a personal one. In summer 2020 while the country was struggling with lockdown we were dealing with a different nightmare, as Tony (Bungy for the Navy and football mates) was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer, just before his 60th birthday.  Advanced meaning it has already spread to his bones and it is now incurable, they can only manage it for as long as they can.  The treatment is still going well, but it means a lot to us both to raise as much money as we can to fund research into this cruel disease, and other treatment options.  Prostate Cancer UK strive for ‘a future where lives are not limited by prostate cancer.’  We fully uphold that mission and want to do all we can towards it.

As we have said before, the treatment side effects will make this a big challenge for Tony.  But it is also hugely beneficial as it keeps him fit and active but also giving him motivation to do so, something which treatment from this cruel disease make so difficult.  We hugely appreciate anything you can give to support us in our challenge, and all of the support you have given us over the last two years.
