Story
Who are we?
We are six University of Warwick students (Maya, Celine, Ruby, Holly, Renee, and Aarzoo), who will be travelling to Accra, Ghana, for 6 weeks over the summer to support the teaching of Maths and English in different schools at various levels. Besides teaching, we will also be contributing to and immersing ourselves in school life in many other ways, such as helping with extracurricular activities. A key role as student volunteers is to raise money and awareness for "Warwick in Africa"; a holistic educational programme across Africa (WiA). Although the student volunteer programme is an integral part of WiA, it only represents one-third of the support that WiA provides for schools in Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania.
More on the Warwick in Africa program
WiA is a multifaceted programme consisting of three core elements: a Student Volunteer programme, a Lead Teacher Support programme, and a Teacher Support program. Through these programmes, WiA supports the education of Maths and English in 28 of the poorest schools in Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania. So far, the programme has benefited 130,000 learners since 2006 and trained 5,000 African teachers. WiA makes sure that, in this approach, they are helping to find sustainable, creative, and innovative solutions to provide young people in Africa with an enhanced learning experience from which they can build a positive and fulfilling future.
