Story

Many thanks for taking the time to visit this, my first, JustGiving page, though JustGiving is no stranger to me, as I have regularly used the site to sponsor others over the years.

Now it is your opportunity to help me help the children the charity I-CAN supports!

Two challenges here.  The first is for me, a young 64 year old,  to complete successfully the National 3 Peaks Challenge, along with my colleagues in the RR Donnelley Team over the weekend of the 12th & 13th September.  The second is for you to encourage me in the best way possible – give lots of money.

The 3 Peaks Challenge consists of an initial hike up Ben Nevis in Scotland (a 10.5 mile round trip to the summit at 4.409 ft), followed by a scramble up Scafell Pike in England (6 miles there and back to the top at 3,209 ft) and finally, a climb to the peak of Mount Snowdon in Wales (3,560 ft and 7 miles in all back to the bottom).  The catch is that the whole exercise has got to be completed within a 24 hour time limit!  A limit which does include the driving time between the peaks of over 10 hours in good traffic and a distance itself of over 460 miles.

The target I have set myself is to raise £2,500.00 for I CAN, please help me achieve it.

Clearly climbing any mountain requires a fair amount of physical fitness and to ensure that I do give it my very best shot.  I have been “in training” so to speak since May and blessed with some great peaks on Arran on which to practise.  Have a read of my updates.  However, on the day/night, the elements could be the determining factor and September as we know can be both wet and very windy, so wish us all luck with the British weather!  There are many tales of those who, through a variety of circumstances, have only completed the distance in the time at the third or more attempt.

My pledge to you is that should for any reason events conspire against us, I will keep attempting and will succeed before I am 65.

I CAN works to foster the development of speech, language and communication skills in all children with a special focus on those who find this hard: children with a communication disability.

I CAN assists with independent assessment of children, runs two specialist schools, provides workshops and courses for professionals working with children and offers supporting materials for parents and teachers.  Please go to the I CAN website for more information, details opposite, or just click on the following link:-

At RR Donnelley, we know communication is of paramount importance in today’s society and we are supporting I CAN to ensure that no child is left out or left behind because of a difficulty in speaking or understanding.

So please dig deep, or perhaps I should say aim high, and support me, support I CAN!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

I have also enabled a JustGiving smartphone unique text code for those of you who, unlike myself, use your phone for more than just making and receiving calls.  Again, as an alternative, please feel free to text WBIC64 with your donation to 70070.

My grateful thanks
Walter
