Story
I work at a particularly small residential school for boys that have Special Educational Needs and their recent efforts have encouraged me to do this run.
A group of these boys have recently spent a week on mountain bikes riding all the way from Newcastle up to Edinburgh. This was not just for the fun of it, they were raising money for the Bone cancer Trust. In the past when they have done such sponsored activities, they might managed to raise a couple of hundred pounds, but this year they raised £1130.00, a massive achievement for a school of just 50 boys.
The reason why so much money was raised, I feel was because the story behind it all really touched them. My colleague has a nephew who at this time is still struggling with cancer. She wrote a story about his life and what he had gone through and she read it out in one of our assemblies. She talked about how much he loved football, his friends and his family and the effects that cancer had on him. She talked about how his whole family went to America for three months so that he could get the treatment he needed to survive and the elation when it had been successful and the cancer had gone. She explained the sadness when they found out that the cancer had spread to his lungs and how his horrible fight had started all over again. These boys were obviously touched by this story and really dug in to raise as much money as they could, and they did.
So, this has spurred me on to do the same for such a worth while charity.
I plan to run Route 66, which is 2,280.3 miles, and would love to raise at least £1.00 a mile.
