Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This year, I have rediscovered my love/hate relationship with running. I’m never going to break any records or win any medals but I’ve kept going by setting myself challenges such as running 10k, then 10 miles and clocking up 100 miles in August. On Sunday September 13th September, I will be running the Great North Run Reimagined which is 13.1 miles-a half marathon!
I also want to do this in memory of my beautiful dog Barney and so I’ve chosen to run for the charity Street Paws. This is why........
The bond between a homeless person and their animal is profound. Their animal is their whole world, gives them a reason to carry on, and is often the only source of unconditional love. Homeless people care deeply about the health and welfare of their pets, but can find it impossible to access veterinary care. The teams of veterinary volunteers from Street Paws take to the streets to locate, support and treat animals though Outreach sessions.
The health benefits of pet ownership are immense both mentally and physically. I was so lucky to have the love of my boy for nine amazing years. However, many rough sleepers are asked to give up their dogs to access services. Street Paws provide solutions to homelessness and pet ownership with their unique Emergency Kennel Space Scheme, and Street Paws Kennels installed into hostels to maintain this incredible bond. Sometimes, a dog is the only friend they have.
Founded in Newcastle in April 2016, Street Paws currently provides monthly outreach in the UK across the North East, North West, Yorkshire, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Street Paws work with local groups and agents in the area to reach out in the local community. The Charity funds all treatment for conditions diagnosed by their veterinary teams. They refer and fund surgical procedures and neutering to their supporting veterinary practices.
Street Paws work with other agencies supporting the homeless and will respond to any requests for help and advice. They provide food, coats, collars and leads at their outreach.
