Story
On Saturday 14th August, 2021 around 8:30am local time, the
south-western part of Haiti was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2. A magnitude higher than the 2010 earthquake. The worst-affected areas of the country were Jérémie and Les Cayes, however, the devastation was felt throughout the country. Hundreds of people have been injured and fatalities are soaring as rescue efforts are underway.
In addition to the earthquake, political instability, food insecurity, Covid-19, the country has also been devastated by storm Grace, which has brought floods in the region. The local authorities are overwhelmed as they do not have the capacities to provide the necessary aid.
We are raising funds to help provide relief for the next few weeks to purchase basic necessities.
By working with grassroots organisations who are on the ground, we will be able to reach the people who really needs help.
UHUK (United Haitians in the UK) and Shai Foundation are working together as we say in Haiti, l'union fait la force.
Since 2012 Shai Foundation has been supporting children and families in Haiti, enabling those impacting by the 2010 earthquake and other social adversities to rebuild their lives. Shai Foundation is also supporting children living in an orphanage in Les Cayes, one of the cities most affected by the recent earthquake.
As victims of natural disasters face tremendous emotional stress and financial costs, we hope this fund will help alleviate some of the challenges. We also acknowledge that during this time many people are also facing hardship themselves therefore grateful for any donations and no donation is too small.
