Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The 10th of September is the Anniversary of my Fathers death he died at 74. Some would say that he 'had a good innings' and it's a good age to live to but that's not quite how I see it – I think he was taken from us too early. He was a very strong and resilient man, he worked all his life and didn't have a day sick for as long as I could remember. It was a sad loss to us all as he was a family man who devoted his life to loving and supporting my mum and his family. I regarded him as a role model and had an awesome amount of respect for him and loved him dearly. So what killed him? Cancer. Having been a fit and very active man all his life he was diagnosed with cancer of the bowel at 69 he went through an operation to remove the tumour and made an extraordinary recovery. 2 years later a persistent cough was the symptom of lung cancer, key hole surgery dealt with that and again he made a good recovery. 3 years after that he was diagnosed as having an inoperable tumour on the Brain. His family and friends watched him deteriorate over the next 6 weeks, taking him from a very strong and proud man to someone that was a shadow of his former self and almost unrecognisable to us. He died with his family at his bedside in a MacMillan hospice. The NHS treatment that he received during his illness was second to none. The facilities were good and the Nurses and Doctors that cared for him throughout his illness were second to none and words cannot express how much gratitude I have for them for making my fathers last days comfortable. The treatments he received allowed him to have another 5 years of good quality life. In his remembrance and to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research I am taking a week out to do the Rob Roy Walk for charity with others who have similar stories to tell. Normally a 7 day walk we plan to do it in 5 so it will be a more demanding task. Details are at : http://www.robroyway.com I am asking you to support me in my challenge to raise as much as I can for Cancer research UK they are the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Their groundbreaking work has saved millions of lives and may help someone you know in the future to recover from this dreadful disease.
