Story
I have been working in the care industry for 10 years and I have seen first hand how devastating this terrible disease is. This disease not only affects the person with the illness but it also has an impact on the family and loved ones closest to them.
Imagine seeing your mother, father or partner slowly slipping away from you, not recognising you anymore, lashing out towards you, crying, calling to go home even though they are in the house they live in. Or if they are unable to feed themselves, use the bathroom or even dress themselves. Then they lose the ability to communicate, walk, swallow and ultimately being confined to a bed. This is the reality of having Alzheimer’s and there is no cure for this! This is why I’m raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
On 8 July 2023, I am trekking 26 miles (42km) in one day through the Brecon Beacons. I’m raising money to help them find a cure, but also to support people and their families who lives with dementia. More people need to be educated on this illness as it’s so difficult for families to understand why an individual with the disease might behaving a certain way.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
