Story
Around a year ago we found out we were expecting twin girls. There are no twins in our family so this was quite a shock. We found out that our identical girls were due on the 11th October.
We were aware that there was always a possibility with twins that they might arrive early, but we were not prepared at all when contractions started on the 30th August, 6 weeks early.
We rushed to hospital and Scarlett and Matilda were delivered by emergency Caesarian at 4am, when they were both rushed into intensive care.
Scarlett stayed in intensive care for a few hours whilst her breathing stabilised, Matilda was there for 3 days before joining her sister in special care. Their stays lasted for 3 weeks during which time they were able to develop their breathing and feeding.
As you can imagine it was a really stressful time, but the staff at the William Harvey in Ashford were amazing, making the whole experience more bearable.
Looking back we were quite lucky to leave after only a 3 week stay. There are babies there who are born far earlier and can spend months in hospital.
I applied for a ballot place before we knew the pregnancy was for 2 and I didn't really think about it too much as there was a lot more going on. I found out I had a place the week the girls came home. The initial fear subsided and gave way to the realisation I could potentially raise some money for this worthwhile cause.
