The Story
The Marathon Des Sables (MDS )is dubbed the worlds toughest marathon, consisting of 6 marathons, completed over period of 7 days. Its a hot, 250km stretch with water restricted rest points, and deliberately positioned to include some of the most rugged and inhospitable terrain in the world.
Last year my brother, Jacob Coates completed the event on behalf of a charity for ovarian cancer, finishing a brilliant 27th position overall from over 1,400 competitors, in which only 1,200 completed the event, so a pretty arduous journey.
Inspiration was realised watching the warrior cross the finish line, his sense of achievement, and the prospect we could do it together in 2015 for the 30th anniversary race was all to much to resist. This combined with wanting to raise funds for the local MUG trust a charity supporting the awareness of male cancer, one close to my heart, was too much to resist and resulted in me signing up to the event.
Contestants are required to carry all their provisions for the week, inclusive of sustenance, bedding, medical supplies, clothing, flare, anti venom, stove and general items for the 7 day event. Water is provided at stations through out the course at 10km intervals, essential, given the recommended and restricted consumption is 12 litres a day and too heavy to carry in addition to the 10kg pack.
The race is over 6 days with a marathon on each and double distance on day 4, before a rest day on day 5, completed with final day marathon on day 6. And just to put the cherry on the cake there is a final charity event race on day 7. At which point I will head straight to the nearest watering hole.
The race is fully self funded inclusive of flights and travel and all the money raised from the just giving site for MUG goes directly to the charity for this great cause.
Please did deep and help this hugely worth while cause.
Many thanks
Tim
