Story
I'm running for SITraN who are doing incredible work at there lab in Sheffield.
SITraN the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience is a world class Research Institute based at the University of Sheffield, dedicated to advancing the understanding of the causes of motor neuron injury and translating this knowledge into curative therapies for patients with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The establishment of SITraN in Sheffield offers the opportunity for a co-ordinated approach to the development and clinical trialling of new therapies based on rational targets of proven preclinical effectiveness for patients.
At the Institute we use technologies such as experimental modelling of disease, gene expression profiling and bioinformatics analysis, gene therapy, nanotechnology as well as stem cell biology to improve therapy delivery into the nervous system in order to significantly accelerate the pace of therapeutic development for neurodegenerative disorders. SITraN combines under one roof basic science and clinical research into motor neurone disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. This multidisciplinary approach provides a stimulating, vibrant education and training environment for both medical and neuroscience students from the UK and overseas.
Professor Pamela Shaw is the Director of SITraN which is located in a state of the art specially designed facility within the University of Sheffield campus opposite the Royal Hallmashire Hospital.
