We teach children about food and farming to create a more food literate generation

Story

Back in April 1998 we
organised a Young Farmers Variety Show at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr. The show
played to full houses for three nights with over 100 on a waiting list for
tickets. We called the show “ Best Show Ever” with a cast of 200 drawn from
eleven Young Farmer’s clubs from west central Scotland. The show raised £13000
( £20000 in todays money) for Sargent Cancer Care. The rationale behind the
show was to promote agriculture after the BSE crisis and help develop a better
relationship between town and country. £3000 of the monies raised was from
video sales and as time has moved on, so has the demise of the video player. We
have decided that as we come out of COVID the time was right to celebrate the
“Best Show Ever” again but this time on YouTube. This will be used, through a
giving page, as a fund raiser for RHET ( Royal Highland Education Trust) who
organise farm visits for children throughout Scotland enlightening them on
farming and food production. Most of the young farmers of then, are now the
farmers of today, continuing to produce the highest quality food anywhere in
the world. We would like to thank once again those who took part, particularly
Elaine Bryson our stage manager and my son David Watson our musical director
for holding the show together with NO stage rehearsals in the 5 weeks it took
to put the show together. Fiona Kerr, Low Dallars, Hurlford along with her
mother handled all ticket sales by phone. How times have changed.

Thanks for reading this text and can only ask you to give generously to our
giving page. The YouTube and giving page above. We dedicate this event to those
who took part but are sadly no longer with us. Respect. Iain Wallace-
ForFarmers.

Our purpose is to bring farming and the working countryside and its practices to life for young people. We work with partners to provide and deliver world-leading learning opportunities for all Scotland’s young people aged 3 to 18 about, in and through the Scottish agricultural environment and the countryside. RHET aims to provide the opportunity for every child in Scotland to learn about food, farming and the countryside and to create a wider understanding of the environmental, economic and social realities of rural Scotland. This is achieved through a number of key activities: 1. Farm visits for schools 2. Classroom speaker talks by volunteer farmers 3. Providing free educational resource materials for schools 4. Outdoor education events across Scotland 5. Competitions and projects for schools 6. Training farmers and teachers in the delivery of information relating to food and farming 7. The Royal Highland Show education programme for visiting schools and Children’s Education Centre
