Story
Mandy and I will be taking part in the Macmillan Mighty Hike Half Marathon along the north Norfolk coast on Sunday 21 May. We are completing it in honour of Mandy’s husband Richard. A much loved Father, Husband, Son and Brother.
This is Mandy’s story….
Richard was a robust loving husband and father who had a career in finance and IT. He was a devout Christian and loved his family and sport. He would avidly follow his beloved Liverpool in the premiership. He also liked to keep up to date with the cricket and helped his sons in their quest for knowledge and independence.
On the 5th April 2020 our lives changed forever when Richard was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. He had been suffering from a painful back that just kept getting worse. In the end he went into hospital and we were told that he had full blown stage 2 Myeloma. Unlike other cancers Myeloma only has 3 stages. Richard was at the stage where treatment would hopefully place him into remission. With Myeloma no two people are the same. Outcomes vary and we were told that people had survived for 20 years with disease. Unfortunately there is no cure at the moment.
Richard’s Myeloma turned out to be very aggressive. He was placed on four different types of treatment over 2 and half years and also had a stem cell transplant which placed him in remission for 5 months until the cancer returned aggressively again. He was courageous for 2 and half years until he could fight it no more. He passed away peacefully on the 2nd October 2022 with his family all around him. He is missed so much.
The hospital, the Big C and Macmillan were all superb with his care and giving support to our family. That is why I’m taking part in the Macmillan Mighty Hike on the 21st May 2023 with my friend Karen. We are taking part in the half marathon and hope to raise a lot of money for Macmillan so they can continue to support families like mine when needed.
Please help by sponsoring us and thank you for taking the time to read this.
