Story
In April 2024, I will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon with my sister in support of Twins Trust.
The Twins Trust do amazing work to support families with twins, triplets and more…, alongside educating hospitals to provide better antenatal care and funding vital research into complications affecting multiple pregnancies.
In January 2022, my sister Eliza announced to close family that her and her partner Jonny were expecting twins 👶🏽👶🏽 This was the most amazing and special news and we were all so excited!!!
At 17 weeks, the twins were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). Over the next 17 weeks, there were weekly hospitals visits to 3 different specialist hospitals across the country, 50 ultra sound scans, 3 3D scans and in utero surgery.
Thanks to two of the UK’s top fetal medical experts, Mr Martin Maher and Professor Asma Khalil and their incredible teams, the twinnies had the most exceptional care and successful in utero surgery (the odds of both twins survival was just 50%).
Despite it all, the complicated pregnancy, birth, prematurity and postnatal period, Eliza and Jonny were always so strong and positive! I’m so lucky to be an Auntie to these very special twins- Jackson Xander and Jonah George (who turned 1 in July 2023 - happy and healthy) 🦊🦊
Sadly, many families don’t share the same outcome. There are still too many hospitals that do not have the expertise required to effectively monitor such high risk pregnancies, and there is still a lot we don’t know about TTTS. That’s why we’re running - for these families. Every single parent deserves to meet both of their babies and every twin deserves to grow up together. 🤍
