Everybody faces the dreaded waiting room at some time in his or her life. Sitting for hours waiting for a train,                                                         for a G.P. appointment,                                                                                      for a passport to be processed                                                               or a million other situations.                                                                                                                                                                      For most people the uncomfortable waste of time happens once or twice and then we can go home to something more to our taste. 

FOR A CANCER PATIENT, LIKE MYSELF, WAITING BECOMES A WAY OF LIFE.

Waiting at first, fearing to hear the worst news in the world.                Then waiting for the many treatments which will give a bit more precious time to spend with a young family,                                                 to finish something important,                                         or simply to enjoy a bit of retirement.                                 Then waiting some more to hear if the treatment has worked. 

Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is a Magical Place. People go in with terror and almost always come home with hope. Everybody who works at Mount Vernon is on our side. They know that we are facing the most important battle of our lives, but this is not going to happen overnight. With constant supervision they are committed to providing the ammunition to help us win. But this ammunition takes time. Time to diagnose scans, time for blood tests, time to talk about treatments, time to wait for solutions to mix.

Waiting for everything, often just sitting around, sometimes every week, sometimes every month. Sitting in a very crowded room with … noisy bored children … phones pinging and somebody else’s conversations at full volume! 

We all know that everything will be given to treating and research but there is a limit to what can be provided. Waiting cannot be avoided but it can become supportive. With more comfort we could sit together and come to know each other, understanding that we are not the only person in this overwhelming situation, or simply bringing something to do. Help Mount Vernon to make waiting a positive experience
