Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Who am I?
My name is Brynn and I am 15yrs old. People may already know me through my social media pages ‘Breaking down barriers with Brynn.’ I live in Shetland with my mom and sister. I am autistic and have ADHD, severe asthma and fixed ankle contractures which means I rely on a wheelchair to get around.

What am I doing?
To celebrate turning 16 at the end of April, I have decided that for this years challenge I am going to attempt to push myself in my wheelchair a gruelling 16 half marathons during the month of May. I will be completing a full half marathon in one day which is 13.1 miles and will be completing  a total of 16 half marathons during the month of May. So on average I will be completing a half marathon every other day, which is a minimum of 209 miles during the month of May. I predict each half marathon will take me a minimum of 5 hours to complete, if we get some good weather. I am still looking at getting out there regardless of the weather, battling Shetlands wind and rain, which means I could be out there pushing for 10 hours in one day. I'm going to concentrate on just taking that first push and focusing on one mile at a time.

Why am I doing this?
Ability Shetland is a charity that provides support to people all over Shetland, from childrens clubs, sports clubs, art clubs, boat trips, going on walks and the use of adapted equipment for locals and visitors to use to get outside and explore what Shetland has to offer.

In 2019 Ability Shetland helped me to rediscover the great outdoors and also my freedom. They gave me the chance to use one of their all terrain Mountain Trike wheelchairs and opened up a whole new world to me. With Ability Shetlands help and by using their Mountain trike I was able to fundraise and raise money to purchase my very own active wheelchair.

My life has changed so much since then and it is because of this that I have been able to get outside and see sights I never thought I would see with my family and friends. My family have now become official OS Getoutside Champions and I have also been recognised as Ledlenser’s everyday hero, I have been nominated for some amazing awards, none of this we ever thought possible.

I have been volunteering with Ability Shetland at their children’s clubs for over 3 years now and have volunteered over 950 hours helping other children with additional support needs, including their families and also through fundraising.

All money raised will go to Ability Shetland to enable them to continue helping and providing support to the people of Shetland and visitors from far and wide.
