Story

As many of you know, our lovely, lovely Dad fell asleep for the last time just before Christmas last year.  We are devastated that he has left us and we miss him so, so much every single day.  It certainly hasn’t got any easier in the last few months and we feel heartbroken by the massive hole he has left in our lives.  He was - and still is - our hero, inspiration and role model.

Dad’s wish was to stay at home throughout his illness (in the house that he and Mum built when they were young newly-weds).  We cared for him at home and he enjoyed daily visits from his best friends.  Only in his final week did we need any help throughout the nights (as he needed medication that we weren’t allowed to administer).  In that final week, we were very grateful to receive amazing support from St David’s Hospice Care 'At Home' nurses – who came to help us each evening and throughout the night, sitting with us as we sat with Dad and ensuring he was comfortable throughout.  The care they provided to Dad was everything we could have hoped for and more.  The nurses were professional yet so friendly.  Dad loved them and he was so grateful for all that they did - and we loved them for talking to us into the early hours and trying to help us to come to terms with what was happening.  They really do work incredibly hard.  Some of them do this as an extra ‘job’ on top of their normal job; others are dedicated full-time St David’s carers.  To do this job every week requires such strength and dedication.  Staying awake all night must be hard enough but to know that your patient might slip away at any moment must make the job almost impossible to bear.
Sadly, not everyone is able to have the help we received.  The nurses are funded through the St. David’s charity - and funding is limited.  This
is why we have decided to undertake our first ever sponsored event and we are very passionate about doing it for St David’s Hospice Care.

We, the three Genner sisters (Sam, Nyki and Sarah Jane), are taking
part in the St David’s Moonlight Walk, when we will climb Pen-y-Fan through the night of Friday July 7th.  None of us are fit, all of us are fat and SJ is still pretty scared of the dark so it should be a night to remember.  We know that Dad will be so proud of us and he’ll be giving us an extra push if we need it.

We have watched and supported your amazing efforts in 10k runs, bike rides, colour runs, tough mudders, pretty mudders, half marathons,
marathons and even pyjama days – but the three of us never thought we’d be climbing together.  If we make it to the top, at least we’ll be that little bit closer to Dad and hopefully we’ll catch a glimpse of his shining star at the summit.

Please donate what you can to this fantastic cause.  We - and all of the people who will benefit from the amazing care that the Hospice provides – will be eternally grateful.

With much love,

The Genner sisters.
