Story
Hello and thank you for visiting my Just Giving page.
Information:
My name is Tessa Jones and I am a 6th year student at St.Luke's High School. In August 2012 I will be sent overseas to China to spend a year as a voluntary teacher specialising in conversational English. I will be doing this through the non-profit organisation Project Trust. I'm incredibly excited about the project and can't wait to immerse myself in another culture and become part of a community different from the one I'm used to.
What exactly is Project trust?
Project Trust is the UK's original Gap Year provider. It is the only Gap Year charity that sends volunteers over for an entire year. It was established in 1967, they have over 40 years experience and have sent over 6000 volunteers to over 60 countries.
Project Trust is registered as a Charity in Scotland (SCO25668). They specialise in sending 17-19 year old school leavers overseas for long term volunteering placements of 8 or 12 months. They currently have volunteering opportunities in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
If you'd like to know more about Project Trust and the work they do then you can do so here: http://www.projecttrust.org.uk/index.php
The project and the work:
I won't know my exact project until March 2012, however, there are various different regions Project Trust send volunteers to. Every region of China is different and the projects are chosen to give volunteers the opportunity to get to know one part really well. It could be the deserts and grasslands of Xinjiang, China’s central Asian region, where people you meet are as likely to be Kazakh, Kirghiz or Uighur as they are to be Han Chinese. Gansu, a very poor and very welcoming agricultural province or Jiangxi, south of the Yangtze and the centre of China’s ceramics industry – a fantastic place to spend time if you are interested in Chinese art or history of art.
I will be working in a state middle school, teaching conversational English to students between the ages of 14 to 17. Normally i'll teach 16-18 lessons a week and also help the teachers improve their English. I'm also keen to set up extra curricular clubs focussing on drama, music and art.
Some extra information on China:
Capital: Beijing
Languages: Chinese and other 'minority' languages
Currency: Renminbi
Religion : Buddhism, Daoism, Islam, Christianity
I'd be very grateful for any support this year with my fundraising, whether that's with Ideas for fundraising, participation in sponsored events or a donation (no matter how small).
EVENTS:
Sunday 4th September: I will be Running the Great Scottish Run 10k to raise money for my gap year. If you'd like to sponsor me feel free to donate online or I'd be happy to meet anyone for sponsorship. (:
