Motability believes that everyone has the right to personal freedom and independence. For disabled people, having the means to get out and about is often life-changing, allowing them to enjoy their lives in a way that many of us take for granted
Currently over 620,000 disabled people use the Motability Scheme; most simply exchanging their government funded allowance for a standard production car. A small number each year need extra help from Motability in the form of a charitable grant. Motability helps these people by adapting their Motability cars, as well as providing vehicles large enough to meet their needs and we can help towards driving lessons for young disabled customers aged 16-32.
Motability’s charitable grants fund helps some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged disabled children and adults in the UK to become mobile, every year we need to raise £2.5million to assist all of the people who request our help – any support you can provide would be gratefully appreciated.
A little bit about who we are raising money for…
Thomas is 12 and has cerebral palsy; he cannot walk unaided so uses a wheelchair fulltime. His mum Naomi has suffered with ill health herself and having a toddler as well as Thomas made life physically exhausting and going out nearly impossible.
Through Motability’s Charitable Grants programme Naomi was able to get a suitable car that was large enough to fit Thomas’ new electric wheelchair, she was also able to get a wheelchair hoist fitted and other specialised adaptations to make the car suitable for the whole family.
The car has made a real difference, Naomi says, “We’ve been able to get out and about to football matches, and visited the zoo, just me and my boys and we no longer have to rely on anyone else, now that we have a car that takes Thomas’ electric chair I don’t know how I ever coped without one. Our car has had the biggest positive impact on our lives than any kind of help we have had before”.
