Douglas Academy Staff Summer Challenge

Douglas Academy Staff Summer Challenge · 25 June 2020
On Monday 25 May, a 46-year-old African American man named George Floyd was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The officer, who has since been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, kneeled on Floyd’s neck as he struggled to breathe.
Since then, protests have erupted across the world, with people taking to the streets in cities including Los Angeles, London and Berlin to demand justice for Floyd’s murder. And online, celebrities and non-celebrities alike have been taking to social media in their thousands to amplify and share anti-racist movements and individuals.
As a group we decided that we'd like to do something to support the anti-racism movement during our summer holiday. We will collectively be walking, running and cycling the distance between Douglas Academy (Milngavie, Glasgow, Scotland) and George Floyd's hometown of Cuney Homes (Houston, Texas, USA) - 4584.9 miles.
We are raising money for Show Racism the Red Card, who provide educational workshops, training sessions, multimedia packages, and a whole host of other resources, all with the purpose of tackling racism in society. Established in January 1996, the organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to publicise its message. Across Britain, Show Racism the Red Card delivers training to more than 50,000 individuals per year.
