Story

Many thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving Team page.

On 12 March 2011, Japan was plunged into chaos after a cataclysmic earthquake sent merciless tsunami waves rushing through its helpless streets. The unforgiving tide of water unleashed after one of the biggest quakes in recent history obliterated tens of thousands of buildings, devouring almost anything in its path.

It was Japan's most powerful earthquake since records began and the entire north-east coast of the country was pretty much detonated as a result causing billions of pounds of damage. Cars, ships, buildings and people were all swept away by the enormous wall of water, rendering hundreds of thousands of people and animals homeless, without shelter, water, electricity and clothing.

Watching the unbelievably destructive images helplessly from the comfort of our homes in the UK as the incredible force of mother nature wreaked her havoc, we couldn’t just sit by and not do anything to help the country and its typically brave and stoic people, in the most unbelievable of humanitarian crisis.

Which is why a group of us best girlfriends have got together and decided to test our own metal by putting ourselves through the toughest of Snowdon climbs, ‘The Watkins path’ to raise some vital funds for all the Japanese people who have been affected by the earthquake.

The charity we have chosen is a small humanitarian charity called Humanity First, which is entirely made up of volunteer international aid workers. Humanity First was one of the first international aid charities on the ground in Japan as the earthquake struck. So all of the money we raise from our climb will go directly towards helping the Japanese people rebuild their lives, providing them with shelter, first aid, clothing, food and support.

So on Saturday 4 June at 8am... picture this... Olivia Farnesy, Emma Doyle, Tamsin Daniel, Isla Hampson, Esther Starling, Esther Nicklin and Polly Clark, (AKA TEAM “GIRL POWER’ !) will be donning our hiking boots and as much energy bars and Red Bull as we can muster, to climb to the summit of Snowden via the Watkins Path. Named after Sir Edward Watkin, it was opened to the public in 1892 by Gladstone, who gave a speech at what is now known as Gladstone Rock.  The top part of the walk is across loose scree, and the path can be hard to follow as there are some steep drops. Eeeeek!

Suffice to say, this climb will be quite a test of all of our physical fitness and endurance levels, as the majority of us (whilst having a love of the great outdoors) are more regular ‘high heel’ wearers and city dwellers than regular mountain walkers! However our path guide will be Welsh team member Polly Clark who hails from the Brecons, and is experienced at climbing mountainous peaks, so we shall be in safe hands.
