A little about me and my challenge
I am just one of many who are rider volunteers for SERV (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers), and I have been involved for over five years. I am also the hospital liaison officer for SERV’s Surrey and South London Group (S&SL), who will be the beneficiaries of this fund-raising effort.
Nick-named “the blood-runners”, SERV provides free out-of-hours transport for urgently-required blood products, tissue samples, etc. to an ever expanding number of NHS hospitals who wish to use the service. In addition, SERV S&SL has recently embarked on a Milk Bank Support Service, which collects frozen mothers' milk from donors, and transports it between hospitals as required.
Amongst other bike-related activities, I’m also an Incident Management-trained track marshal at the Isle of Man TT races, usually located somewhere on the Mountain section of the course.
I am taking the opportunity in this Olympic year to raise funds for SERV S&SL by riding the Mountain Circuit continuously for 24 hours, stopping only for fuel, food and the occasional rest. This challenge will be undertaken during TT race week, starting after the day's racing on Monday 4th June, and I hope that my efforts will raise £4000 for SERV S&SL.
The bike I’ll be riding is my own 2011 Yamaha R1 as pictured in the TT pit lane, and not the red 2005 model in the other photos, which was trashed by an impact with a clue-less full-grown deer on the way to the TT last year, five minutes into the journey.... I was lucky to walk away unscathed! My thanks to Woking Yamaha for the speedy completion of a fantastic deal on the new R1, which had its first service on the Isle of Man three days later. This year the bike won't still be running in, so I hope to get a few quickish laps in during the challenge.
Although I am paying for all the fuel, tyres, etc. used in this challenge, just as all SERV volunteers do when on duty, in addition to a donation to SERV S&SL, any sponsorship just to cover the costs of the challenge would be gratefully received.
