Story
In 2019-20, 13,364 sexual crimes were reported to the police in Scotland. 2,343 were reported rapes or attempted rapes. Only 324 of those were prosecuted and there were just 152 convictions.
No-one is immune from the threat of sexual violence, but being female is far and away the biggest risk factor to becoming one of those statistics.
It takes real courage to report a sexual crime, and reporting is no guarantee of any sort of justice.
This is why my Big Swings For Survivors Fundraising Challenge this year is in aid of the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. This local charity does incredible, difficult, uplifting work supporting the survivors of sexual violence. I’ve been so lucky this past year to be involved at ERCC – being able to see that work from the ‘inside’, and how much it matters to everyone in the Centre is really quite special. Money is what stops them from doing more.
So from Ne’er Day on 01 January to Valentine’s day on 14 February 2021, will you please help me support the Centre? In those 45 days, I’m going to swing my kettlebell 13,364 times to honour every one of those survivors who reported to the police in 2019-20. Every one of those swings is also for those survivors who weren't able to report, for whatever reason.
Please consider donating to spur me on over my 45 day challenge and support the Centre.
