My name is Lauren and I am a born and bred Cornish Gal. For the past year I have been working as a Training Officer at the Cornish Charity ShelterBox and seen first hand the incredible work that this charity does, my role includes the selection, recruitment and training of the amazing volunteer response team that we send out when disaster strikes and hearing stories from field always touches me deeply. 

My plan was to swim 1 mile, on the hour, every hour for 24 hours but then the Coronavirus Pandemic hit which has meant that I have had to change my challenge. I have always been an avid swimmer and decided I wanted to do a physical challenge to raise money for those families that lose everything when disaster hits with me not being unable to do my initial challenge due to pool closures after a lot of logistical planning I will now be doing the '24 Over 24 Challenge'. At first light on 5th September 2020 I will swim 24km over 24 beaches, 1km off each beach finishing at Gyllyngvase at around 8pm, I will be supported by a safety swimmer and my husband in a Kayak.

So a bit more about ShelterBox. We all probably take for granted the fact that we have somewhere dry and warm to sleep, to prepare meals or just have fun with our families. But when disaster hits some people lose all of this and have to start the long process of rebuilding their life. 

ShelterBox teams work with disaster-hit families around the world, offering emergency shelter and other essential items to support them in their own process to recovery and finding their new state of normality.
