I am taking part in this challenge in memory of my mum Sheila Leonard who was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (a brain tumour) which was incurable and untreatable in 2017. Marie Curie supported my mum and family from the moment she was diagnosed from arranging adaptations to our home and attending day centres and activities at the hospice. As my mums health deteriorated quickly it become difficult for me and my sister to care for her at home and she went into Marie Curie Liverpool hospice for respite and the care and support not only my mum received but our family as a whole was unforgettable. My mum passed away on 7th May 2017, only months after being diagnosed, and the amazing support continued for my family. My mum was the most beautiful, caring and selfless person I have ever met after over 40 years of being a nurse to continue and carry on to volunteer for charities herself, I'm so lucky for all the precious memories we had and to have her as my mum.
Not only am I doing this for my mum, but my sister Jen who is now in remission and my dad who passed away in 2013 both stayed in this hospice for respite and again the care and support we received was amazing.
This trek will be a challenge for me, taking me out of my comfort zone especially leaving my family and son Daniel for 9 days with no contact from home which will probably be the hardest part of all, but this will nothing compared to what my mum, dad, sister and many others have been through and knowing that my fundraising will help future patients and families will get me through it ♥️
Marie Curie supports many patients and their families who again I would like to do this in memory of, I have close friends and family who I know would agree with me that without Marie Curie their journey would of been so much harder.
I have wanted to give back in some way to Marie Curie since my mum passed away and as I work for Riverside housing our new corporate charity is Marie Curie I have become corporate charity champion and would like to help reach our fundraising target. Riverside and my colleagues supported me during the time my mum was ill and after she passed away, especially my team leader Gill who I can’t thank enough for the support she has provided and continues to do so.
