Sheffield poem-a-thon for refugees and asylum seekers · 2 April 2016
On 2nd of April 2016 myself and 47 poets from North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire will be holding a poem-a-thon (a sort of poetry reading relay) in support of Refugees and Asylum Seekers. Our aim is to fill a full day with poetry to raise money for a very good cause!
We will all be raising money for ASSIST Sheffield who support failed asylum seekers - who are not allowed to work, register as homeless or to be placed in local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling for food, clothes and accommodation. ASSIST says:
£5 could cover expenses for a weekend’s hospitality for an asylum seeker in need of somewhere to sleep
£17 could cover travel expenses to enable an asylum seeker to get to medical and legal appointments
£20 could give a vulnerable asylum seeker a week’s ASSIST grant to enable them to buy some food
POEM-A-THON?
On 2nd April, a relay of 48 poets will each read for 8 minutes throughout the day. We are really lucky to be hosted by The Art House, a new venue with its own lovely café between 10am and 6pm.
