Story
I never thought I’d run a marathon but this year, for one time only, I will be putting on the shoes and running The London Marathon in aid of Action For A-T.
A-T (Ataxia Telangiectasia) is a rare, genetic degenerative disease of childhood. Life span is dramatically shortened, with those affected generally living only into their twenties. There is currently no cure, or treatments, to slow down or stop the progression of this devastating disease, so I want to help by raising funds for medical research to find a cure.
I write stories for children, do many author visits to schools, and have the privilege of speaking with children about what’s going on in their brilliant imaginations. We often discuss what they want to do when they grow up. We perceive growing up as a right of passage, but for some it is something that may never come to fruition - both a truly heartbreaking concept and reality.
I run in the woods most days to keep fit, and to keep my wolf and chihuahua exercised… the farthest I’ve ever run in my life is ten miles! When I told a friend I’d signed up for a marathon he wondered if I knew it was 26 miles ;-)
My great-grandfather, Frank, was a cotton mill worker in Derbyshire. He also played football for Derby Junction, and would walk the 30 miles round trip from his home to the football field to play a match. I figure if Frank could do that most Saturdays, then I should be honouring his memory and be able to run a marathon.
Please help me to support Action for A-T. Thank you xx
