Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am looking for donations as I need to raise £80 for Action Cancer and I hope to achieve this by doing the 10 Mile Moonlight Walk on Friday 17th June 2011.
I had an ovary removed in April this year and with stopping smoking last year, you can guess that I am not fit and have put weight on so this will be a big challenge for me but it’s a worthwhile one none the less!! Thank you in advance for your help!!!
My mum had a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer and I am at risk because of this. I had my last mammogram two weeks ago and get checked regularly. I was advised to get both my ovaries removed as I am at risk there too but if I do, they put me on HRT, and research shows that HRT can increase your risk of breast cancer so I am either going to be lucky or unlucky. But I am fortunate that there are charities such as Action Cancer and below is a snippet of what the Moonlight Walk is aiming to achieve:
“Each participant aims to raise a target sponsorship amount of £80 - the cost of a breast screening for one woman which could save a life through early detection. We are the only charity in Northern Ireland to offer breast screening services to women, with the service available for women aged 40-49 and 70+ at Action Cancer House in Belfast or on the Big Bus.
For every 1000 women screened, an average of seven breast cancers are detected – hopefully at an early and treatable stage. This is only possible because of the continued, generous support Action Cancer receives from the public, organisations and business sectors in Northern Ireland. “
