Story
In May/June 2015 (we had to postpone) Ian Parsons, Sam Coates, John Whittaker, Chris Pease and myself (Susannah Parsons) hope to paddle from Sennen or Cape Cornwall across to the Isles of Scilly (weather and work permitting). This is a personal challenge for me as I recover from my accident (I had my last operation in April 2014 and was signed off in August), as well as an opportunity to raise money for St Julia's hospice in memory of Chris Prescott and Gary Scrase, members of our canoe club who died in 2012, and now also in memory of my grandma Enid Relf, who died in St Julia's hospice last year.
We're going as a group of friends, each having at least 4 years experience paddling sea kayaks around the Cornish coastline and 1 member has achieved the crossing before. Ian Parsons will lead the group, although we are all ultimately liable for ourselves. We have trained in a variety of ways - I've found swimming front crawl a very successful method to build up muscles and endurance.
Colin Parsons has agreed to man a support boat for the trip and we will be equipped with VHF radios as well as having GPS receivers in the group. During an 18.8 nautical mile practice paddle in 2014, we managed to paddle at 3 knots, including rest stops, so we look set to complete the crossing to the Scillies in around 8 hours.
If I can get a phone signal, I will post photos from the crossing live from the trip...watch this space http://sennen2scillies.blogspot.co.uk/
Due to fog on our departure day in 2013, and Ian working in Algeria in 2014, we had to postpone this trip to 2015. However, the signs are looking good so far this year, and we are ready!
