Story
Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page.
So, after a good 4 years of entering I shall be running the London Marathon on Sunday 13 April 2013, raising money for Child Poverty Action Group.
This will be my third marathon but by far the most exciting, not far to travel, no killer hills and seeing the sights of the big city during a, no doubt sociable, 'small' run!
The facts
There are 3.6 million children living in poverty in the UK today, about 1 in 4 children.
Working does not provide a guaranteed route out of poverty in the UK. 62% of children in poverty live in a household where at least one member works.
Poverty damages childhoods and life chances. Children living in poverty miss out on basic things other children take for granted e.g. school trips, inviting friends for tea and family holidays.
While studies show that there are more play areas in deprived areas, their quality is generally poorer. Vandalism, playground misuse and danger of injury all act as deterrents to using what otherwise might be good facilities.
What do Child Poverty Action Group do?
CPAG, identify steps that government and society have to take to end child poverty. So far they have secured £500m a year more on childcare to help working parents on low incomes and in 2010 worked with the End Child Poverty campaign to call for the Child Poverty Act which places legal duties on central and local government to work to end child poverty by 2020.
However, the situation for children living in poverty will get worse. Child Poverty Action Group have predicted that 300,000 more children will be living in poverty by 2015/16 and will continue to rise to 4.7 million children projected to be living in poverty by 2020.
