Fundraising for Histiocytosis UK
Around March 2021 Stewart (dad) began to feel poorly, this is so unlike my dad as he was never ill! So unfortunately not being able to see a doctor they prescribed him antibiotics over the phone, this didn’t work so he was prescribed different ones which once again didn’t work. He then on Easter Saturday went into the A&E and just increasingly got worse and worse and ended up being put into the ICU. So many different tests were done but nothing seemed to be working, he was first diagnosed with anaemia, adult glandular fever but after being in hospital for nearly 4 weeks he was then diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) however something was still stopping his medication from working. It was a race against time on what was happening inside his body and why it was attacking itself and not healing. He was then moved to UCLH in the ICU department where they grew blood cultures many times and finally found what was stopping him get better, it was the lymphoma.
He then spent the next year in and out of hospital for chemotherapy, scans, blood tests, dealing with sepsis and infections. Until he sadly lost his battle when catching a virus again but due to the hospitals being so overcrowded and treatment not being dealt with quick enough he sadly declined very quickly especially with his breathing and was put on the highest amount of oxygen they can give. He was moved up to the ICU ward at UCL hospital and sadly as a family we got a phone call on the 15th April to say that there was nothing that the hospital could do to save him so we went and said our goodbyes and heartbreakingly went back home to wait for the dreaded phone call to say that he was gone. This is a pain that none of us would wish on our worst enemy and if there’s one little thing we can do like raising money for this charity then we will do it to help others.
We have made the decision as a family to raise money and awareness for this horrible disease Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)
