Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Last November our 2 month old son Ruben was admitted to hospital with a mystery illness. He became completely unresponsive and didn't even move when blood was taken. He woke occasionally to feed but kept vomiting everything up. His condition worsened over a 2 day period which involved 2 lumbar punctures to test for meningitis as well as countless blood tests, swabs, urine samples etc. - the cause unfortunately still could not be found.
After a routine x-ray showed some of his organs were out of position he was immediately transferred by emergency ambulance to Alder Hey childrens hospital where within an hour he had been scanned and diagnosed as having something called an atypical intussusception. Within a couple of hours he was undergoing surgery to remove the portion of bowel that had been affected (and ruptured) and within a week he was on his way home with nothing more than a very healthy scar across his stomach! We were later told that his condition has a 100% mortality rate if untreated and usually this happens between 4-7 days post onset so we were desperately close to losing him. Had it not been for the doctors, nurses, surgeons, imaging staff and everyone on ward K3 I'm not sure where we would be today.
I am doing the 3 peaks challenge with three of my closest friends for 2 reasons. The first is to raise money for medical equipment for Alder Hey - the same sort of equipment that saved Rubens life. The second is because it is the least I can do to say thank you for all that Alder Hey did for me and my family over that week back in November.
Thank you very much for your sponsorship and/or words of support....I am sure we will all need it in just over 2 weeks time!
