In September last year, an opportunity arose to join up with over 250 football supporters and take on the challenge of cycling 150 miles over 2 days from Barnsley to Amsterdam to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
At the time, the thought of cycling 75 miles each day seemed like an un-achievable challenge given the fact I’d only ridden my bike a handful of times last year and had never completed anywhere near 75 miles in just one ride.
I didn’t know much about Prostate Cancer but after a little research the stats really did hit home. It’s the most common cancer in men in the UK, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year. What’s worse is that 1 in 8 men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer at some point in their lifetime.
Immediately after this I jumped at the chance to get involved, pledged to raise £1k and joined the team.
8 months down the line, over 2k miles ridden including a century ride and over £1k raised for this charity… I’m ready to go! BUT… given how much I feel I have progressed in this time, I just don’t feel like the original 150 miles over the 2 days would challenge me enough.
This in mind - Instead of starting in Barnsley on Friday 3rd June, I will begin my ride on Wednesday 1st June in Blackpool and will cover approx 280 miles over 4 days!
Day 1 – Blackpool to Manchester – Approx 60 miles
Day 2 – Manchester to Barnsley – Approx 75 miles
Day 3 – Barnsley to Hull – Approx 75 miles
Day 4 – Rotterdam to Amsterdam – Approx 70 miles
The generosity of people who have sponsored me has been unbelievable and I’m truly grateful for this. Friends, family, work colleagues and complete strangers have all dug deep to help me achieve my pledge of £1000!
