Tuesday 14th July 2020 marks 10 years since my dad died of a sudden heart attack. He was a keen cyclist and loved Carding Mill Valley, often cycling there from Oldbury, West Midlands. I consider it to have been one of his favourite places and we had many a happy memory there. His ashes were scattered there after he died. I missed that, as I was in hospital - myself under the care of cardiology for the first time. I’ve recently been discharged from cardiology after the narrowing of my arteries has receded. I’ve not been to Carding Mill Valley since before my dad’s ashes were scattered.
On the 14th July 2020, I’m going to use my recently found love for cycling and ride out to Carding Mill Valley from Birmingham and then back to Birmingham.
I have planned two routes - both the same apart from one route includes a climb called The Burway. Check it out on Google - it’s brutal. The figures for the two routes are as follows:
Excluding The Burway:
* 110 miles
* 7,138ft climbing
Including The Burway:
* 120 miles
* 8,205ft climbing
In all honesty, I hate climbing on the bike. I’m not at my fittest and tackling The Burway may be incredibly difficult for me, but that’s the point. The second route is for anyone who wants to join and help raise funds but doesn’t want to take on The Burway.
I already have a few people who may be joining me on this ride, Covid-19 restrictions permitting. If you want to join, please leave a message and I will get the routes to you.
On that note, if the UK restrictions have to be enforced again regarding unlimited exercise then I will postpone the ride until it is no longer against government guidelines. The 14th July is the ideal date for this ride but following the guidance has to be a priority too. If I do have to postpone then the ride will take place at the soonest opportunity.
If I’m totally honest, there is a massive emotional connection to this. For closure 10 years on - to finally visit my old man’s final resting place.
I’m also doing it to raise funds for British Heart Foundation - in the hope that extra funds will help to support those with cardiac issues and the families of those struggling to cope.
I have named this ride the ‘Steve Neville Memorial Ride’ due to the significance of the date and place but my dad just represents many thousands who aren’t as fortunate as me in being discharged fit and well.
Please, would you consider donating to this great cause? In return, I will batter my legs and the rest of my body to ensure that I complete the challenge. I can’t promise I won’t cry - but if I raise a few quid then it’s all worthwhile!
The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help me hit my target.
Cheers.
