SHAVING MY HEAD (not beard) TO BUILD AWARENESS AND RAISE MONEY
Some of you will know that my father (John Harding) was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, a blood based cancer, in October 2014 just as he was celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary.
The disease had penetrated the central nervous system including the brain and I must admit my family and I feared the very worst.
Clearly I had underestimated two things;-
- The incredible care offered by the staff at Swindon's Great Western Hospital
- My father's defiant determination to live
After months of brutal chemotherapy his illness was placed into remission and he was able to enjoy the next period of his life. Slowly but surely he rebuilt his stamina and started to enjoy life again. Then cruelly, about two weeks ago, disaster struck. The chemotherapy regime that had cured him had caused a secondary cancer - this time Leukaemia - another blood based cancer.
The outlook this time is not so positive and ultimately he will succumb to the disease - but not without a fight.
I am now hoping to make a tiny sacrifice in order to help other people suffering from these terrible blood based diseases. It may be too late to cure my father but for many others there is hope - but only if we work together, supporting each other.
Enter DKMS and the excellent work they do. DKMS is a charity who believe that no one suffering with a blood cancer should die because they are unable to find a matching blood stem cell donor. Their mission is to delete blood based cancers.
Their key mission is to provide a suitable donor for every person in need of a blood stem cell donation. Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
A blood stem cell donation from a matching donor could save their lives. All it takes to go on to the UK stem cell registry is a two minute cheek swab, sent to you when you register online.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Please help me to raise awareness and money for this excellent charity. Perhaps even register to be a stem cell donor yourself.
