We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

The festive period is a time for family, reflection and togetherness, but many people spend this time in less than ideal circumstances, sad or lonely, and I have always felt keenly aware of that.  So this year I decided I won't be having a traditional Christmas - I'm going to attempt Kilimanjaro instead!

After sharing this news online, my friend Sharon said she'd love to come along, so we will be doing it together.  We are flying to Tanzania in the wee small hours of Boxing Day, to attempt a 7-Day trek, starting on the 27th Dec. up Africa's tallest peak and dormant volcano (5895m/19,430ft) - taking the Lemosho route - which is approximately 70km.  The final stage of the climb begins at midnight on NYE - a steep and chilly 5-to-7-hour trek up to summit, through rocky scree and high altitude...we'll definitely be missing the Xmas munchies!

If we make it up, we will watch the sunrise from the peak of the world's tallest freestanding mountain on New Year's Day, 2022. That's pretty cool - so fingers crossed!  We are so fortunate to be able to do something like this and I would like to create an opportunity to fund raise for Marie Curie. Sharon will also be fundraising for a charity of her choice - Victim Support, Isle of Man.

Why Marie Curie?

I have lost family members, recently a dear childhood friend, and several colleagues - all to terminal illnesses, mainly cancer. I also have several friends living with cancer at the moment, putting every ounce of their strength into fighting the illness and it can't be easy.  Marie Curie support those living with a terminal prognosis, and their families:

"We’re here to support everyone in the UK through all aspects of dying, death and bereavement – and to fight for a world where everyone gets to lead the best life they can, right to the end."

At 39, I am very aware that I've lived longer than my own mother, who sadly died from cancer at 34.  I also lost my Dad in 2012, after battling a long and protracted illness, and my Grandparents shortly afterwards from similar difficulties.  Bereavement impacts people differently, and the work Marie Curie are doing is invaluable. I would like to support them, so that they can continue to support many families across the UK.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I've shared it to raise awareness for Marie Curie and the excellent work they do.  If you have a spare few coins, please consider donating.  100% of your donation will go to Marie Curie and I will also be donating to the charity.

Thank you for anything you are able to give.  I promise to update you as the time goes on - for now you can have a giggle imaging me taking every possibly flight of stairs going - Doha is not known for its peaks! Next stop...sand dunes!

Much love to you all over the festive period, and thank you,

Steph. x
