Story

UPDATE!

Sam has completed his Commando Tests and on Friday 3rd December we will be watching him receive his green beret at The Kings Squad Passing Out Parade - I have my waterproof mascara and tissues ready (and a rather lush Radley handbag!).

Please dig deep and show your support for our amazing Royal Marines!

---------------

On Sunday 12th December 2010 I will be entering my first ever 5k race. Those of you that know me will already be rolling on the floor laughing at the thought of me running for a bus...let alone running for five kilometers!

I have been inspired to do this by the great fundraising events that have come about as a result of Help Our Wounded (HOW).

Help Our Wounded is a fundraising arm for The Royal Marines Association, Charity Number 206003. HOW was formed on the 4th March 2010 because of the number of seriously injured Royal Marines returning from operational tours in Afghanistan Iraq and other areas of armed conflict.
Help Our Wounded is a community based effort seeking to help the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (Registered Charity No 1134205), meet it's target of raising £6M by the 350th anniversary of the Corps on 28th October 2014.

On the 7th September 2009 my step-son, Sam Leggett, went to CTCRM to earn his Green Beret. Since joining, he has been transformed from a boy into a wonderful man who we are all immensely proud of. Although an injury during his Commando Tests has delayed things slightly, we hope that he will get his 'green lid' before the end of the year. So, if Sam can continue on his journey with such amazing determination and belief...then the least I can do is a little 5k run to raise some money for our Royal Marines and their families!

The beneficiaries of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF), which the RMA support are serving and retired Royal Marines and their dependents and it strives to support three main areas of activity.

1. The Recovery Pathway - helping the wounded and injured make as complete a recovery as possible and assisting those having to leave the service to transition successfully into civilian life.

2. The Quality of Life Pathway - ensuring that the quality of life of those facing multiple tours in high threat environments is as good as possible by providing funding for decompression activities (such as expeditions, adventure training and sport), improved amenities, welcome home events and memorials.

3. The Through Life Pathway - supporting those who have served their formal links with the service and have fallen on hard times; the major service charities believe that they have a tsunami of need building up in about 10 years time and demand is already increasing.

Sadly, but importantly, the RMCTF also provides immediate death grants to the next of kin of those who die while serving
