Story
Flight For Every Mother is one doctor's unique journey across Africa to promote safer pregnancy for mothers everywhere, in particular those who live in sub-Saharan Africa.
Internationally, too many women die, or become seriously ill, whilst pregnant and in childbirth. In 2010, there were an estimated 287,000 deaths worldwide, of which 99% were in developing countries and over half in sub-Saharan Africa alone.
Sophia Webster, a UK-based Obstetrician, will pilot a small aeroplane from South Africa to the UK in July-September 2013, making frequent stops at medical and midwifery facilities to facilitate practical skills teaching and to raise awareness about the factors influencing women's health.
One important factor in the maternal health equation is the education and training of skilled healthcare workers. The RCOG Smile Appeal brings together expertise and funding to deliver educaiton and training in developing countries with the worst maternal and infant mortality records.
