Story

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

I have a wish in memory of my late Mother (Pardeep Kaur Deol) who sadly passed away in 2019 from Motor Neurone Disease.

Early next year, on the 11/1 my mum would have been turning 60. To celebrate and honour her life, I would like to fundraise for the creation of a well. I want to make a difference in the world and forever keep my mum’s spirit alive. My mother was selfless, courageous and a fighter. I would often refer to her as my very own Princess Diana. She was Princess Deepa.

As much as I would joke about it, it is written in her name. She couldn’t help but feel deeply for others. Her depth was the core of her identity. Grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other. All I can do is love her, love the world and emulate her by living with a daring spirit and following my heart. This ties in with my 30th birthday. We would often talk about celebrating this milestone together. This is how.

I will be volunteering with Khalsa Aid’s Water 4 Africa project across Malawi, Zambia, Gambia & Kenya. I will continue to work with Khalsa Aid across the African continent to provide clean water for more communities in the near future.

The value and importance of water for our planet and all its living beings cannot be understated. According to the United Nations, around 2.2 billion people across the globe lack access to clean drinking water and instead are forced to rely on contaminated water supplies. The scarcity of water in areas will also displace 700,000 people by 2030 if no action is taken to tackle this issue. Contaminated water poses many risks, especially for small communities. The journey to retrieve potentially dirty water can be dangerous with journeys being several miles in distance. The use of contaminated water results in the spread of diseases such as Cholera, Dysentery and Diarrhoea.

Khalsa Aid’s coordinators will establish where clean water is needed the most and I will be involved in the next priority project. Khalsa Aid works with local businesses and contractors to drill and build water pumps to provide clean water to rural communities. A deep well draws water from up to 40 metres beneath the ground, ensuring villagers can have access to long-term clean water for drinking, cooking, washing and keeping livestock hydrated.

Putting a smile on people’s faces is one of the greatest things anybody can do. I can’t wait to provide you all with videos to show you what difference our contributions will make in people’s lives if we all work together.

P.s if you donate please opt in for gift aid as it adds 25% more value to your contribution.

Thank you for your continued support of these vital projects for the betterment of humanity.

Forever Grateful,

Sonia Deol
